Realtors® and Fair Housing: A Commitment to Equality

As a Realtor®, you play a crucial role in helping consumers find their dream homes. Your job is not only to match customers with properties that best suit their needs but also to ensure that they are treated fairly throughout the process.

Discrimination in housing based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin is not only illegal, but it's also unethical. For example, here at Broward Palm Beaches & St. Lucie Realtors®, we are committed to fair housing for all, and this policy is embodied in the Realtors®' Code of Ethics.

The Fair Housing Act was enacted in 1968 to ensure everyone had equal access to housing regardless of their background. Realtors® are responsible for ensuring that they uphold these laws by educating themselves about fair housing, advocating against discrimination, and providing their clients are not discriminated against. Updating your knowledge of the latest rules and regulations is essential, as it can help you avoid potential legal issues, cultivate community trust, and build your professional reputation.

As a Realtor®, it is vital to stay informed, and continuing education is crucial for that. The association offers several opportunities to improve your knowledge and skills regarding fair housing. You can attend webinars, conferences, or even live credited courses. Did you know that we offer courses like Affordable Housing Solutions, At Home with Diversity Certification and Play Fair, or Pay Later - The Realtor® Guide to Fair Housing?

We all have a part to play in advancing our community and standing united against discrimination. You can do this by raising awareness about fair housing issues in your community, ensuring that your marketing and advertising materials are inclusive, and providing fair and equal services to all of your clients. It's also important to speak out against any unfair practices or policies in the industry. Become an agent of change for those who are facing discrimination.

The Broward, Palm Beaches & St. Lucie Realtors® staff & leadership team works with government agencies and community organizations that promote fair housing to raise awareness and ensure that housing policies and practices are fair and equitable. If you're passionate about protecting property rights and raising awareness in the community, we have many ways to get you involved through one of our 28 committees offered.

We must stand together to ensure everyone has a safe, secure, and welcoming place to call home.
