Homeowner’s Guide for Hurricane Preparedness

Hurricane season has officially begun and is expected to last approximately six months, with peak activity typically occurring in August and September. While predicting storm forecasts can be challenging due to various factors, preparing for severe weather as the season approaches is crucial.

Homeowners residing in storm-prone regions should stay informed with the latest information to mitigate potential damage. The National Hurricane Center serves as a valuable resource for checking forecasts, weather alerts, data discussions, and more.

Starting preparations early allows ample time to purchase supplies, such as water, food, tools, emergency supplies, and other essentials. To facilitate your preparations, a checklist has been provided for each category to guide you in acquiring the necessary supplies for this season.

Checklist for Homeowners

  • Nonperishable food

  • Water

  • First-aid kit

  • Personal hygiene items

  • Flashlights and battery-operated radio

  • Lighters or matches

  • Games for recreation

  • Lastly, a good evacuation plan, securing your home, and preparing for power outages.

Hurricane Readiness Plan

Having a well-prepared hurricane plan is essential for managing and recovering from severe weather events. To alleviate stress during and after a storm, consider implementing the following steps:

  • Secure all windows with hurricane shutters, trim trees, clear rain gutters, bring indoor furniture and unsecured items, and avoid windows. In case of a power outage, follow the following items.

  • Ensure an adequate supply of bottled water and freeze perishable items.

  • Charge portable chargers for cell phones and other electronics.

  • Fill your vehicle's tank before the storm.

  • Have enough cash on hand for emergencies.

  • Safeguard your home by installing hurricane straps or clips to secure the roof against strong winds.

  • Keep a list of emergency contact numbers visible.

  • Identify the nearest shelter or alternative evacuation routes.

  • If you have pets, locate a pet-friendly shelter in advance.

By following this guide and being prepared, you can better navigate hurricane challenges and ensure you and your loved ones' safety.
